A scar is an irreparable trace of a previous wound.
When the dermis is damaged, the body produces new collagen to reconnect the cells that have been broken down by the injury.

The wound will then turn into a scar. Depending on the depth of the wound, it usually takes about 18 months to 2 years for scar tissue to be fully healed.,

During the first stage of the healing process, the wound normally looks reddish/pinkish.

As time passes, this redness turns into brown, which eventually lightens throughout time.

The ACUTE INFLAMMATORY PHASE

This happens immediately after the injury. This is the immediate response of our body when it detects a wound, and it usually lasts up to 72 hours.

During this phase, the wound may experience inflammation, redness, swelling and pain around the injured area.

The PROLIFERATION PHASE, OTHERWISE KNOWN AS THE REPAIR PHASE

This stage begins when the inflammation subsides. This stage happens when granulating tissues, which consist of collagen, are formed.

This process can last from 72 hours to 6 weeks after an injury.

MATURITY PHASE OR THE REMODELLING PHASE
Maturity phase or the remodelling phase – This begins several weeks after the proliferation phase. In this phase, the collagen in the repair phase is replaced with a much stronger type of collagen.

The body then molds it into the line of stress in order to give the scar the same function as the tissue it replaced.

At the end of this phase, the wound is permanently sealed with scar tissues. This process usually takes 3 weeks to 2 years.
